How HVAC and plumbing companies get into the Google Maps 3-Pack

The Maps 3-Pack is the box of three local businesses at the top of many searches. Getting in depends on relevance, distance and how trusted your business looks online.

The short answer

Google picks the three businesses it shows in the Maps box based on three things: how relevant your business is to the search, how close you are to the person searching, and how prominent and trusted your business looks online. You can't move your office, but you can do a lot about relevance and trust.

Why the 3-Pack matters so much

For searches like 'AC repair near me' or 'emergency plumber', the Maps box often sits above the regular results. Many homeowners call straight from it without visiting a website.

Only three businesses appear at first. Being fourth usually means being hidden behind a click most people never make.

Get your Google Business Profile right

Choose the most accurate primary category, such as 'HVAC contractor' or 'Plumber', and add secondary categories for the other work you really do.

List every service you offer, set your service area to the cities you actually cover, and keep hours accurate, including after-hours availability if you offer it.

Add real photos of your trucks, team and finished jobs. Post updates regularly so the profile looks active.

Reviews: steady beats sudden

Reviews are one of the strongest trust signals. A steady flow of recent reviews tends to help more than a burst followed by silence.

Ask right after a good visit, make it easy with a direct link, and reply to every review, good or bad, in a calm and helpful way. Never buy reviews or offer rewards for them; it breaks Google's rules and can get your profile suspended.

Back it up on your website

Google checks that your website agrees with your profile. Build a clear page for each main service and each city you serve, with the same business name, address and phone number everywhere.

Mention the neighborhoods and landmarks you actually serve, answer common questions and make it easy to call.

Consistent listings everywhere else

Directories, trade associations, local chambers and data aggregators all repeat your business details. Mismatched names, old phone numbers or old addresses confuse Google and weaken trust. Clean them up once and keep them consistent.

What owners can actually control

A complete, accurate Google Business Profile: the right primary category, real services, true hours, a clear service area and real photos of your team and work.

Steady, honest reviews from real customers, with thoughtful replies to both good and bad ones.

A website with strong service and city pages that match what your profile says.

Consistent business details across directories and the rest of the web.

What owners can't control

How close the searcher is to your address. Rankings vary block by block across a city.

Google's changes to how the map looks and ranks. The playbook has to be steady, not a chase after every update.

Competitors' spend and activity. You focus on being the clearest, most trustworthy choice.

Maps, AI search and booked work

The same details that help you on Maps help AI assistants describe you accurately, which is one reason AEO and local SEO work so well together.

Map visibility is a leading signal. What matters is how many map views become calls, how many calls are answered and booked, and how many become completed work.
